Submitting humbly to correction and reproof is much like applying alcohol into an open wound. Although it is an agonizing treatment, you need to do it so that you will feel better in the process. Later on, your wound will be healed.
Suppose you’re arguing with your younger cousin regarding political anomalies. You feel ecstatic because your brain overflows with the facts and opinions that would topple your cousin’s ideas. But actually, you are not sure about the facts and figures that you say. Despite this hindrance, you are still enthusiastic to reason out and defend your stand that you even forget you’re talking with your younger cousin. Surprisingly, he could still manage to point out good opinions. Worse, he could discern that you only invent the facts and figures you present about the topic. In a meek way, he advises you not to do that again. Your face turns red because of shame and embarrassment. Your younger cousin corrects you. Surely, it hurts the pride within you.
Or maybe, a classmate willingly teaches you about the topic that you missed. But, something urges you to ignore her because you are more intelligent than her. So, you could not take the situation that someone who is of less stature than yourself teaches you. Then, you leave her behind and simply disregard her efforts to help you. But, at the back of your head, someone says, “How dare you waste the opportunity to learn?”. You realize, by then, that she is the only one who can teach you because the rest are busy. You have no choice but to submit to her because there will be a quiz later. In this situation, your need to listen to her is just like the big necessity to apply alcohol into your wound so that it will be healed immediately. Hence, gulp down your pride because you really need and must listen to her.
Of course, you may be tempted to deny it and see if you could take the pain. This is like refusing alcohol to be put into your wound. You may be able to endure the pain for a while, but soon the wound gets severely infected. You would now need to see a doctor. This will require a larger piece of time, effort and money.
Always pretending that you don’t need help and that you always do right endures only in the short run. You will find out that it’s harder to endure the pain when you don’t apply remedy right away. As in reality, it’s harder to be a better person when you refuse to accept correction or reproof.
For this reason, it matters a lot to cure your wound through using alcohol. When you receive correction or reproof from one of less stature than yourself, just humbly admit it and submit inwardly as well as outwardly without any pride, rebellion, or resentment rising up within your heart.
